Seventh Ward Outdoor Classroom • New OrleansThe Outdoor Classroomwas designed, fabricated and installed in the Seventh Ward Community Garden by professor Nils Gore’s Arch401 Studio in May, 2007. The Classroom is situated behind the neighborhood center for The Porch Cultural Organization, our client, and is used for community events, and childrens' art education classes. It is made of steel framing with slate chalkboards along one side and benches along boh sides. It is a 10’x20’ space constructed of 5 steel bents with a polycarbonate roof system over an opaque, CNC perforated plastic panel system which filters light. Large gates open to the east, onto a large yard space that is used for community gatherings. The classroom is both a space in itself, and also a gateway from the community center to its yard. It was completed in May 2007. click here for photos of the Classroom. click here for more information on all of the New Orleans projects. |
