Taking Advantage of Pre-engineered Building Systems

The studio was based on the premise that pre-engineered building systems have a high—if limited—degree of intelligence built into their design and delivery. The problem is that they are generally not recognized for their design quality, and are often not taken seriously by the architectural design community. As a result, they tend to be used exclusively in industrial and agricultural buildings where design quality is of lesser importance, or in situations where owners wish to save money by going directly to the manufacturer and by-passing the typical architect-builder relationship.

This studio sought to question that pre-conception and try to find the inherent value of industrialized building systems and take advantage of that value for positive architectural purposes.

Program: A new, 10,000sf grocery store on the east side of Lawrence, Kansas. The Community Mercantile, a local organic grocery store, was the client for the project.
